Senior Project Accountant (Interim)
Location: Irvine
Duration: Interim / Contract
Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Project Accountant (Interim) who can independently manage full-cycle project accounting from contract review through project closeout. This role requires strong technical accounting knowledge, hands-on execution, and a deep understanding of GAAP revenue recognition for project-based work.

This is a true plug-and-play interim role for someone who has successfully managed the full project accounting lifecycle end to end.
Key Responsibilities

  • Perform full-cycle project accounting, including:

  • Reviewing contracts to identify key financial terms and determine appropriate GAAP revenue recognition treatment

  • Setting up projects, budgets, and billing structures in the financial system

  • Tracking and analyzing project costs and expenses, including labor, subcontractors, purchase orders, and subscriptions

  • Managing project billing, invoicing, and revenue recognition

  • Monitoring budgets, forecasts, and Estimates at Completion (EAC)

  • Closing projects and ensuring accurate financial close and reporting

  • Ensure all project accounting activities comply with GAAP and internal accounting policies.

  • Partner with Project Managers to provide financial insight, resolve issues, and support project profitability.

  • Support monthly and quarterly close activities, including revenue recognition, backlog reporting, and gross margin analysis.

  • Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable as they relate to projects (customers, vendors, purchase orders).

  • Prepare ad hoc analyses and support special projects as needed.
    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA or MBA preferred.

    • Minimum of 4+ years of hands-on project accounting experience, managing projects from contract review through close.

    • Strong accounting background with demonstrated experience applying GAAP, specifically project-based revenue recognition.

    • Prior experience in engineering, construction, or professional services environments preferred.

    • ERP system experience required; experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations is a plus.
    Required Skills

    • Proven ability to manage the entire project accounting lifecycle independently.

    • Strong understanding of GAAP revenue recognition and cost accounting principles.

    • Advanced Excel skills; Power BI experience a plus.

    • Highly detail-oriented, analytical, and organized.

    • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with Project Managers and leadership.

    • Ability to step into an interim role and deliver immediate results with minimal ramp-up.
