Job Description


Our client is a well-established educational institution with a strong reputation for academic excellence and community engagement. As we continue to grow, we are seeking a strategic and hands-on Controller to oversee financial operations and ensure the integrity of our accounting and reporting functions.

Position Summary

The Controller will serve as the chief accounting leader, responsible for directing all aspects of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, compliance, and reporting. This individual will play a key role in supporting the institute’s mission by ensuring strong financial stewardship, maintaining robust internal controls, and providing leadership to the accounting team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Management & Reporting
  • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting to senior leadership, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Manage annual audits and serve as liaison with external auditors.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Lead development of the annual budget in collaboration with department heads and leadership.
  • Monitor budget-to-actual performance, providing insights and recommendations for fiscal responsibility.
  • Compliance & Controls
  • Maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with applicable regulations, grant requirements, and institutional policies.
  • Oversee tax filings, government reporting, and grant compliance.
  • Team Leadership
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Implement best practices in financial processes, systems, and controls.
  • Strategic Partnership
  • Collaborate with leadership to support decision-making with financial analysis, modeling, and long-term planning.
  • Provide clear financial insights to non-financial stakeholders.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit/educational financial regulations, and grant compliance.
  • Experience managing audits and preparing board-level financial reports.
  • Proficiency with accounting/ERP systems; advanced Excel skills required.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
