Job Description


 

The Director of Accounting & Finance is a senior finance leader responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting operations, financial planning and analysis, budgeting and forecasting, internal controls, and other finance-related activities. This position will play a key role in ensuring the integrity of the company’s financial processes while providing insightful analysis and strategic support to executive leadership.

 

As part of a publicly traded organization, the Director will operate in a sophisticated, highly controlled environment and partner closely with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with broad finance and business acumen and has demonstrated success leading teams, improving processes, and supporting strategic decision-making.

 

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Controllership
  • Lead and oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, accruals, and other accounting functions.
  • Direct the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established timelines.
  • Maintain strong accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in accordance with U.S. GAAP and company requirements.
  • Review complex accounting transactions and provide guidance on appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Ensure balance sheet accounts are properly reconciled, supported, and reviewed.
  • Partner with internal and external auditors and coordinate audit-related activities within the areas under the position’s responsibility.
  • Maintain a strong control environment and support compliance with applicable SOX requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen controls, streamline accounting processes, and improve the scalability of the finance organization.

 

Financial Planning & Analysis
  • Lead or provide significant oversight of the annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning processes.
  • Analyze financial and operating performance, including budget-to-actual and forecast variances, and identify key business drivers.
  • Provide management with actionable insights regarding financial performance, trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Develop and monitor key financial and operational performance indicators.
  • Support scenario planning, investment analysis, and other strategic financial evaluations.

 

Leadership & Process Improvement
  • Lead, develop, mentor, and retain a high-performing accounting and finance team.
  • Establish clear objectives and performance expectations while fostering professional development and succession planning.
  • Evaluate existing accounting and finance processes and implement improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, automation, and scalability.
  • Leverage financial systems and technology to enhance accounting operations, analysis, controls, and decision support.
  • Collaborate effectively with Tax, Treasury, Legal, Internal Audit, Operations, Human Resources, and other functions.

 

Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including meaningful leadership and management responsibility.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and experience operating within a robust internal control environment.
  • Experience with monthly and quarterly close processes, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and management reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop accounting and finance professionals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand both detailed financial information and broader business implications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with senior executives and cross-functional leaders.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with ERP systems, financial planning tools, and Microsoft Excel.

 

Highly Preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or MBA.
  • Experience working for a publicly traded company or within a similarly complex, highly controlled corporate environment.
  • Experience with SOX compliance and internal controls over financial processes.
  • Public accounting experience, particularly with a Big Four or other national accounting firm.
  • Experience leading finance transformation, ERP implementation, automation, or process improvement initiatives.
  • Experience supporting acquisitions, integrations, or other strategic corporate transactions.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on, collaborative leader who can move comfortably between technical accounting, financial analysis, and strategic business issues. The individual should demonstrate sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, high standards of accuracy and accountability, and the ability to challenge assumptions constructively.

This role requires someone who can build strong relationships across the organization, develop talented teams, improve processes, and provide senior leadership with the financial insight needed to make informed business decisions.
