Job Description


Position Summary: This Corporate Senior Accountant role has its own required responsibilities and also has dual responsibility as it provides support and back-up coverage to both the Corporate Senior Accountant - Debt/Receivable and the Corporate Senior Accountant - Stock/Cash positions as well as special projects. The Corporate Senior Accountant - Debt/Receivable role is involved in the accounting for all debt and receivable related transactions for multiple non-traded, public REITs. The Corporate Senior Accountant - Stock/Cash role is involved in the accounting of all shareholder transactions as well as certain cash related activity for multiple non-traded, public REITs. This Corporate Senior Accountant role will be cross-trained

in both Corporate Senior Accountant roles so as to provide coverage and flexibility in the group workload to allow for expected/unexpected absences, temporary surges in work during peak periods such as month-end, quarter-end and year-end as well as to assist with special projects as directed by management.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Property review: Evaluate property schedules for various trends and prepare analysis of significant changes and/or unusual fluctuations. Review supporting documentation to determine reasonableness of explanations provided on various properties. Research variances as determined during review and prepare summary of any potential issues or findings.
  • Investments: Record monthly and quarterly activity related to securities held including purchases, sales, dividends, interest income and fair market value adjustments.
  • Review and coordinate timing of monthly cap ex draws and net cash flow sweeps for apartment properties. Determine and coordinate recordation of necessary push-down JE's for property related costs paid by the REIT.
  • Interface and coordinate with the Company’s partner accounting group on several nontraded, public REITs to assist with preparation of various schedules including, but not limited to, debt, property taxes, tax abatement, insurance, deferred income and minority interest.
  • Provide accounting support to and track information required by these groups.
  • Upload monthly data from accounting group and perform validation of trial balance.
  • Related to month-end, quarter-end and year-end, prepare various accounting reconciliations, analyses of balances/activities, audit confirmations as well as interface with external and internal auditors related to the same.
  • Participate in the development and modification of accounting policies for related areas of involvement.
  • Assist with monthly income statement and balance sheet fluctuation explanations, as requested, on a monthly basis and other top level schedules and analytics.
  • Assist Management with additional activities or projects as assigned.

 

Secondary/Support Duties and Responsibilities

Corporate Senior Accountant - Debt/Receivables
  • Notes receivable accounting: Review legal documents for loan terms, set up accounting for new entities, determine waterfall and create journal entry templates. Calculate, prepare and initiate wire or check payments for cash transactions related to closings, fees and legal costs.
  • Recordation of loan, acquisition fee, origination costs, discount, monthly discount/origination cost amortization, monthly interest income accrual as well as reasonableness of YTD amounts recorded.
  • Recordation of loan payoff including zero-out of discount/origination costs, principal balance, disposition fee, etc. Additional activities include creation of effective interest schedule (if applicable), contacting borrowers or servicers for payment, review and coding of draw requests from borrowers for adequacy, completeness and compliance with the loan, preparation of audit confirmations and maintenance of loan servicing matrix with key information.
  • Notes payable accounting: Review legal documents for loan terms, set up accounting for new entities, determine waterfall and create journal entry templates. Recordation of loan, loan fees, monthly loan fee amortization, monthly interest expense accrual as well as reasonableness of YTD amounts recorded.
  • Recordation of loan payoff including zero-out of loan fees, principal balance, etc. Obtain debt service statements and initiate wire paymentsor validate auto debit payments, as applicable. Confirm and record cash transactions (payoffs, paydowns, fundings, etc) in multiple bank accounts.
  • Derivative accounting: Process and post cash transactions, prepare monthly accretion schedule, post journal entries, and prepare quarterly valuation.
  • Interface and coordinate with the Debt group on notes receivable transactions and with the Financing group on notes payable transactions. Provide accounting support to and track information required by these groups.
  • Related to month-end, quarter-end and year-end, prepare various accounting reconciliations, analyses of balances/activities, audit confirmations as well as interface with external and
  • internal auditors related to the same. Scope will include notes payable and notes receivable.

 

Corporate Senior Accountant - Stock/Cash
  • Stock transactions: Reconcile and prepare journal entries for all REIT cash activity for stock related activity reported by the transfer agent including sales, redemptions, distributions, commissions, adjustments and fees to related parties for new shareholder accounts. Resolve any discrepancies with the transfer agent and the dealer/manager for stock activity including daily dividend accrual calculations, monthly dividend distribution calculations, weekly broker commissions and dealer/manager fee payouts. Additional reporting requirements related to annual reporting (1099's/1042S's) as well as B-notices and withholding changes.
  • Review shareholder stock redemption requests including checking for eligibility, determination of redemption price based on investor’s account history relative to Share Redemption Plan as well as to reconcile amounts to the transfer agent’s redemption report.
  • Cash transactions: Record other cash transactions for various REITs including: coding and preparation of wire payments for certain AP activity, fees, expense reimbursements, bank fees, interest income, bank account transfers, note receivable receipts and other misc transactions. Maintain cash books and reconcile periodically to MRI and to bank balances to facilitate monthly bank reconciliation process. For cash impound accounts, record, maintain and analyze excel cash books to ensure timely funding by borrower and payment of applicable expenses in addition to processing of certain payments and communication with borrower personnel as well as internal management.
  • Miscellaneous: Prepare various expense accruals each month for such items as audit fees, tax fees, O&O accrual, etc. Compute, analyze and record monthly Asset Management Fees for several REITs. Related to condo sales activity, maintain gain/loss schedule reflecting sales activity as well as record JE's for monthly activity related to condo sales, draws/fundings of 3rd party property management company. Review monthly draw request and financial statements submitted by 3rd party property management company to ascertain reasonableness of amounts and prepare corresponding wires as well as to record monthly activity.
  • Related to month-end, quarter-end and year-end, prepare various accounting reconciliations,

analyses of balances/activities, audit confirmations as well as interface with external and internal auditors related to the same. Scope will include accruals, receivables, prepaids, property taxes and stock related transactions.

 

Experience / Training / Education:

Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting with at least 2-3 years of public accounting experience. Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.

 

Desirable:
  • Experience/understanding of commercial real estate industry is helpful but not required.
